Below is an annotated list of children's literature for the elementary classroom. The books are organized by the Six Elements of Social Justice Curriculum Design (Picower, 2007). It is based on work by pre-service teachers at Montclair State University. They have read and reviewed these books and provided insights into how they can be used in K-5 settings.

Summary: The Bear family decides it is a beautiful day to go to the creek. When they got there, they realized that the local Dump was polluting the creek. They decide it is time for Bear Country to make a change.

Element 6: Taking Social Action: The Bear family attends the town meeting and help volunteer to clean up the creek. They enlist the help of other Bear Country citizens to clean the creek and make other changes at home.

Activities: I would have the students help make changes around the classroom. We would have three separate bins- one for garbage, paper, and bottles. We would practice recycling in the classroom. and have them bring the idea home with them. They will write about how it goes at home in their journals.
